Chapter 20

Tammy had to be in court by 9:00 a.m. She gave herself plenty of time in the morning, to shower and get ready. She wore her best jeans that were not faded and free from any holes. Knowing she was going to jail she wanted to be comfortable. She chose not to wear any jewelry, considering the fact that she was turning herself in, and she told Matt a little white lie, that she was going to be gone a few days with Dwayne. At first, he was upset but only because, of course, he wanted to go too, but Tammy bribed him with a movie date when she returned.

She arrived at the court building a half-hour early and after parking her car, she began scanning the parking lot for Dwayne’s truck. But it was a huge lot with tons of white trucks just like Dwayne’s so she soon gave up. After entering the court building, she glanced down the corridors at the crowds of people sitting on wooden benches along the walls. Some were reading official documents, others were talking to well-dressed men and women—who Tammy assumed were their attorneys—and many were pacing up and down the corridors with excessive nervous energy.

Tammy was disappointed to see there was no sign of Dwayne. She thought maybe he got an emergency call from a client. And then it suddenly occurred to her that there was no way to call him from jail. He only had a beeper. She hoped he would call the house and Judy could fill him in.

While waiting for the courts to open and with no empty seats, Tammy stood against a wall and kept to herself. At the end of the hallway, a woman was crying as she clung to who Tammy believed was her husband. The man tried to console her but failed miserably, and more people began to stare in her direction as her cries became louder and more frantic. Tammy wondered if he was going to jail today also.

Distracted by the woman’s cries, Tammy hadn’t noticed Dwayne walk in, and she jumped when he squeezed her shoulder. “Fuck! You scared me,” she roared while holding her chest.

Dwayne chuckled. “I’m sorry. I thought you saw me.”

“That’s okay.” Tammy leaned in and gave him a peck on the cheek. “Thanks for coming. But you didn’t have to, you know?”

He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her in close. “But I wanted to be here. You don’t have to thank me.” He glanced down at his watch. “It’s almost nine. You should be going in soon. Are you nervous?”

“Yes, I’m nervous. I just want this to be over.”

“And it will be,” Dwayne reassured her.

Tammy considered telling him her plan, but after no more than a few seconds, she decided against it. She knew he’d only protest and would try every possible way to talk her out of it. Once in the courtroom before the judge, she knew he couldn’t say anything.

A few minutes later, the doors of the courtrooms were opened and people began to shuffle in.
